Clinical Outcomes and Patients’ Satisfaction of a New Trifocal Toric Intraocular Lens

Purpose
To evaluate the clinical outcomes and quality of life following femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and implantation of PanOptix trifocal toric intraocular lens (IOL).

Methods
This prospective, non comparative, non-randomized study included 30 eyes of 23 patients with ≥1 D with the rule or ≥0.75 D against the rule astigmatism who underwent FLACS with the implantation of PanOptix trifocal toric IOL between April 2018-June 2019 at Bayindir Hospital. Corneal astigmatism (CA), refractive astigmatism (RA), uncorrected visual acuity for distance, intermediate and near (UDVA, UIVA, UNVA), defocus curves, presence of dysphotopsia and posterior capsule opacification (PCO), need for spectacles, photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity (MCS), rotational stability, visual function-14 (VF-14) tests were evaluated at postoperative (po) 3rd months.

Results
The mean UDVA, UIVA and UNVA were 0.01±0.05, 0.06±0.07 and 0.07±0.07 logMAR, respectively. Six eyes received T2 toric model, whereas 12 eyes T3, 5 eyes T4, 3 eyes T5 and 4 eyes T6 were implanted. All patients reached ≥0.3 logmar uncorrected visual acuity for all distances. The mean CA was 1.6±0.8 (0-4.75) D. The mean RA decreased from 1.8±1.2 (0-4.75) D to 0.41±0.3 (0-1) D. All eyes had ≤1 D of subjective RA postoperatively. Defocus curve had two peaks at 0 and -1.50 D. Spectacle independence was achieved in % patients (28 eyes). The mean VF-14 score was 97.6±2. The mean IOL axis rotation was 2.8±3.400. Three patients reported seeing nondisturbing halos. One patient had PCO. 

Conclusion
This trifocal toric IOL effectively reduced refractive astgimatism and provided excellent visual outcomes with high spectacle independence, patients’ satisfaction and good rotational stability.
