Intraocular fluidics during phacoemulsification depend on numerous factors involving irrigation, aspiration, vacuum, and, ultimately, currents generated by ocular flow. Fracturing of the nucleus before starting emulsification allows for this to be performed in a controlled manner. We present the pros and cons of frequently used techniques in pre-fracturing cataract nuclei.
