While it is commonly accepted that keratoconus is one of the most common corneal disorders worldwide, there are differing opinions, even among experts in the field, regarding the classification, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of keratoconus.

With the support of the Asia Cornea Society, the Cornea Society, EuCornea, and the Panamerican Cornea Society (PanCornea), an international panel of experts have utilized a modified Delphi method to achieve a consensus regarding many of these areas of contention. However, controversy persists regarding both topics that were reviewed in the resultant publication Global Consensus on Keratoconus and Ectatic Diseases as well as topics, such as emerging treatments for keratoconus, that were not. In this Symposium, the invited faculty with present the audience with both expert consensus and disagreement regarding the etiology, diagnosis and management of keratoconus.

Anthony J. Aldave, MD, ABO

Dr. Aldave joined the Jules Stein Eye Institute in July 2002 as a full-time member of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Services. He is currently a Professor of Ophthalmology, holds the Walton Li Chair in Cornea and Uveitis, is Chief of the Cornea and Uveitis Division and Director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Fellowship Program.

Elmer Y. Tu, MD

Dr. Elmer Y. Tu specializes in infectious diseases of the cornea. He is widely viewed as having special expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of Acanthamoeba and other severe infections of the cornea. Dr. Tu's area of expertise also includes new and innovative forms of corneal transplantation and treatment of challenging ocular surface disorders.
