ASCRS Foundation: Improving the World's Vision

The ASCRS Foundation delivers humanitarian eye care to those who need it most in the United States and abroad.

More than 85 million people are visually impaired worldwide. Globally, cataracts are the second leading cause of visual impairment and the leading cause of preventable blindness in the developing world.

The ASCRS Foundation supports physician education and provides humanitarian cataract surgery in the United States and overseas. Through its programs and partnerships, the Foundation works to maximize the benefits of modern ophthalmology and to treat thousands of patients in need each year.

Heart for Humanity- 2020 Chang Humanitarian Award Honoree Announced

In 2020, the ASCRS Foundation is honored to bestow the Chang Humanitarian Award on a man who has given over sixty-years of his life to the cause of sight in West Africa: Dr. Lowell Gess. Possessing a quiet and gentle spirit, Dr. Gess’ humanitarian journey began before he even chose ophthalmology. And now a half-century later, his namesake eye hospital in the Sierra Leone stands as testament to his life’s work.

The ASCRS Foundation is thankful for the leaders, donors and volunteers working to improve physician education and preventable cataract blindness. We are grateful to all those who donate their time, talent and funding to support the Foundation's ongoing humanitarian eyecare and education programs.

Last year, ASCRS Foundation programs served more than 25,000 patients in need in the United States and abroad.

Our nationwide network of nearly 500 volunteers, have delivered more than 4,200 charitable cataract surgeries via Operation Sight.

2020 ASCRS Foundation Run for Sight

ASCRS is cancelling its Annual Meeting originally scheduled for May 15 - May 20. ASCRS came to this decision in the interest of public safety, after monitoring daily recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), and the City of Boston.

Based on the above, and out of concern for public safety, the ASCRS Foundation Run for Sight presented by Johnson and Johnson Vision has been canceled. Registered participants should review email communication for options regarding registration or contact for more information.

We hope that you and your colleagues will be able to join us for a future ASCRS Foundation Run for Sight. Thank you for your support!
